In short: Founded in 1990, Amorphis began as a raw death metal act before evolving into a genre-defying force. By weaving the ancient Finnish epic Kalevala into their sound, they pioneered a unique fusion of heavy metal, psychedelia, and folk, eventually achieving gold records and international acclaim for their innovative, atmospheric compositions.

Amorphis was established in 1990 by Jan Rechberger, Tomi Koivusaari, and Esa Holopainen. Initially, the group focused on death metal, recording their debut, The Karelian Isthmus, after signing with Relapse Records. However, the band soon began to experiment with their sound, incorporating clean vocals, traditional folk elements, and progressive structures. Their 1994 concept album, Tales from the Thousand Lakes, proved to be a pivotal turning point, establishing a signature style that blended death metal with melodic, psychedelic, and folk influences.

The band's lyrical content is deeply rooted in Finnish cultural heritage, frequently drawing from the Kalevala and the Kanteletar, a collection of ancient folk poetry. This thematic focus has remained a constant, even as the band's lineup shifted over three decades. Notable changes included the arrival of vocalist Tomi Joutsen in 2005, who encouraged a return to contrasting vocal styles, and the return of original drummer Jan Rechberger in 2002. These shifts helped the band maintain creative momentum, leading to commercial successes like the gold-certified album Eclipse.

Throughout their history, Amorphis has demonstrated a willingness to experiment with instrumentation, incorporating sitars, saxophones, and orchestral arrangements. Their 2018 album, Queen of Time, marked a significant milestone by reuniting all original members for the first time since 1994. By 2022, with the release of their 14th studio album, Halo, the band solidified their status as leaders in progressive death metal. Their ability to balance heavy, guitar-driven riffs with delicate, mythological storytelling has earned them critical recognition, including a Metal Hammer Album of the Year award for their 2013 release, Circle.
