The soldier who fought for three nations and became a legend of special operations.
In short: Lauri Törni was a Finnish officer who served in the Winter War, the Waffen-SS, and finally the U.S. Army Special Forces. Known as Larry Thorne in America, his life was a relentless pursuit of combat, ending in a mysterious helicopter crash in the jungles of Vietnam during a clandestine mission.
Born in 1919 in Viipuri, Törni began his military career in the Finnish Army, where he gained fame for his effectiveness in the Winter War and the Continuation War. His unit, Detachment Törni, became so feared by Soviet forces that they placed a 3,000,000 Finnish mark bounty on his head. Despite his decorated service, including the Mannerheim Cross, the post-war political climate in Finland led to his arrest and conviction for treason due to his service with German forces.
After escaping prison and fleeing to the United States, Törni reinvented himself as Larry Thorne. He joined the U.S. Army in 1954, eventually becoming a key figure in the Special Forces. He was instrumental in training soldiers in guerrilla tactics and survival, and his reputation for bravery followed him to Vietnam. In 1965, while serving with MACV-SOG, he disappeared during a mission in Laos. His remains were only recovered decades later in 1999, and he was finally laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery in 2003.
Törni’s legacy remains a subject of intense debate in Finland. While some historians argue his post-war actions were part of a plot to facilitate a National Socialist coup, others, including political figures like Jussi Niinistö, maintain his motivations were purely patriotic, driven by a genuine fear of Soviet occupation. Regardless of the controversy, his influence on modern special operations is undeniable; he was named the first honorary member of the U.S. Army Special Forces Regiment in 2010 and remains a central figure in military lore.
