The city that failed to become the New York of the West
In short: In the late 1800s, speculators poured millions into Anacortes, betting it would become a massive railroad terminus. But the boom was built on rumors, and when the bubble burst in 1891, the city's grand vision collapsed, forcing it to reinvent itself through fishing and timber.
The ambitious vision for Anacortes was driven by railroad surveyor Amos Bowman, who moved to the northern tip of Fidalgo Island in 1877. Bowman sought to establish the town as the primary terminus for the Northern Pacific Railway as it pushed through the north Cascades. To promote this dream, he founded The Northwest Enterprise, aiming to transform the area into a bustling hub known as the "New York of the West."
The speculation was intense. Between 1888 and 1890, real estate and development boomed based on railroad rumors, leading the Oregon Improvement Company to post $15 million in bonds to develop the town. However, the dream met a harsh reality in 1891 when the real estate bubble burst. After the 1891 property bubble collapsed, investors suffered heavy losses, preventing the Oregon Improvement Company from finishing the Cascades lines and denying the town the rail hub Bowman had imagined.
Following this economic bust, Anacortes pivoted away from its railroad ambitions. It found new stability through a thriving canning industry, timber mills, and a prominent fishing tradition. Today, while refining remains the area's largest industry, the economy has diversified further to include tourism and yacht construction.
The landscape itself tells a much older story. The cliffs and bluffs surrounding the city contain bedrock deposits dating back 160 million years, though the landforms were significantly reshaped by a major glaciation event approximately 15,000 years ago.
