Lennox Lewis: The heavyweight champion who conquered the ring and redefined British boxing history
In short: Lennox Lewis was a three-time world heavyweight champion who became the first British-born titleholder of the 20th century. A dual citizen of Britain and Canada, he balanced an illustrious amateur career with a dominant professional run, ultimately retiring in 2004 after defeating some of the sport's most legendary figures.
Born in London in 1965, Lewis moved to Canada at age 12, where he eventually discovered boxing. His amateur career was defined by his pursuit of Olympic gold, which he secured in the super-heavyweight division at the 1988 Seoul Games. This victory made him the first super-heavyweight gold medallist to later capture a professional world heavyweight title. Upon turning professional in 1989, Lewis returned to the United Kingdom, citing a lack of boxing infrastructure in Canada at the time, and quickly rose through the ranks to claim the WBC title in 1992.
Lewis's professional journey was marked by resilience and tactical evolution. After a shocking 1994 knockout loss to Oliver McCall, he partnered with trainer Emanuel Steward, who refined his style to emphasize a powerful, authoritative jab. This adjustment proved pivotal. In 1999, Lewis became the undisputed heavyweight champion by defeating Evander Holyfield in a high-stakes rematch, following a controversial draw in their first encounter. His career included high-profile victories over Mike Tyson in 2002 and Vitali Klitschko in 2003, the latter being his final professional bout.
The 2002 clash with Mike Tyson remains one of the most anticipated events in boxing history. Held in Memphis after multiple states refused to license Tyson, the fight generated $106.9 million in pay-per-view revenue. Lewis dominated the contest, knocking Tyson out in the eighth round. By the time he retired in February 2004, Lewis had solidified his legacy as one of the greatest heavyweights of all time, having avenged every defeat he suffered in the professional ring.
