How a South Korean girl group transitioned from septet to legendary five-piece
In short: Formed in 2011, Apink has navigated a decade of evolution. From their debut as a seven-member group to their current five-member lineup, the group has mastered the art of the comeback, securing international chart success and a dedicated global following through constant reinvention.
Apink' and their journey began in early 2011 under A Cube Entertainment. The group's formation was a staggered process: Son Na-eun was the first trainee announced in February 2011, followed by leader Park Cho-rong and Oh Ha-young. The remaining members, Jung Eun-ji, Hong Yoo-kyung, Yoon Bo-mi, and Kim Nam-joo, were introduced throughout the spring of 2011 via social media and their reality show, Apink News.
The group's lineup has seen significant changes over the years. Originally a septet, the group's numbers dwindled as members pursued individual paths. Yookyung departed in 2013 to focus on her education, and Naeun left in 2022 to pursue an acting career. The current lineup features five individuals: Bomi, Chorong, Eunji, Hayoung, and Namjoo.
Despite these shifts, Apink maintained a high level of commercial success. In January 2015, they made history as the initial act to secure five straight Music Core trophies. Their vast collection of music comprises nine EPs in Korea, alongside five Korean studio albums and three from Japan. Their musical direction also evolved, moving from the bright sounds of their debut 'Mollayo' to the bolder, more sophisticated concept found in later works like 'I'm So Sick'.
Their influence extends beyond South Korea, with successful ventures in Japan and North America. They have performed at major international events, including the Canadian Music Fest in 2012 and the KKBOX Music Awards in Taiwan. Their ability to command large audiences is evident in their concert history, such as their 'Pink Paradise' concert in 2015, where 7,200 tickets sold out in just two minutes.
