In short: Born from a vibrant 1980s youth subculture, Arema F.C. has become one of Indonesia's most successful and scrutinized football clubs. Known as the Mad Lions, the team balances a deep connection to local folklore with a history marked by financial instability, ownership dualism, and the tragic Kanjuruhan Stadium disaster.

The identity of Arema F.C. is rooted in the Malang region of East Java. The name itself is linked to Kebo Arema, a 13th-century knight serving King Kertanegara of the Singhasari kingdom. While history books prioritize the king, folklore celebrates Kebo Arema as a formidable warrior who quelled rebellions and expanded the kingdom's reach into Sumatra. In the 1980s, the name was reclaimed by local youth as an acronym for Arek Malang, or Youths of Malang, evolving into a distinct subculture that often challenged the dominant culture of Surabaya.

Founded on 11 August 1987 by Brigadier General Acub Zaenal and Dirk Sutrisno, the club sought to professionalize football in a region previously reliant on government-funded teams. The lion symbol was adopted to reflect the club's establishment during the Leo horoscope period and to honor the Singhasari kingdom. Despite early successes, including winning the 1992 Galatama competition, the club has faced significant volatility. This included severe financial crises in 2003, ownership shifts to the Bentoel Group, and a complex period of dualism between 2011 and 2014, when the club split into two entities amid broader national football management conflicts.

The club's modern era has been defined by both resilience and tragedy. In 2021, entrepreneur Gilang Widya Pramana took over as president, ushering in a new management phase. However, the club faced its darkest moment on 1 October 2022, during a match against rivals Persebaya Surabaya. A crowd crush, exacerbated by the use of tear gas, resulted in 135 deaths and hundreds of injuries. The aftermath led to heavy sanctions, including fines and mandated home matches behind closed doors, forcing the club to confront the profound impact of the disaster on its community and future.
