From dental surgery to the presidency: the complex political journey of Arif Alvi
In short: Before leading Pakistan as its 13th president, Arif Alvi was a specialist in orthodontics and prosthodontics. His path from a student activist shot during protests to a high-ranking political figure is marked by shifting party loyalties and significant constitutional controversies.
Born on 29 July 1949, Alvi’s early life was shaped by political upheaval. While studying dentistry, he became an active member of student unions and was affiliated with the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami. His activism was physically dangerous; during a 1969 protest at The Mall in Lahore against the Ayub Khan regime, he was shot twice, leaving a bullet lodged in his body.
Alvi's professional background is deeply rooted in dental medicine. Following his Bachelor of Dental Surgery at De'Montmorency College of Dentistry, he earned a prosthodontics master's from the University of Michigan in 1975, followed by an orthodontics master's from the University of the Pacific in 1984. He later established the Alvi Dental Hospital and served in various leadership roles within the dental community, including as President of the Pakistan Dental Association and President of the Asia Pacific Dental Federation.
His political career saw him transition from religious politics to becoming a founding member of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in 1996. After serving in the National Assembly from 2013, he was elected President of Pakistan in September 2018, defeating Fazal-ur-Rehman and Aitzaz Ahsan. His presidency, which lasted until March 2024, was characterized by intense legal and political friction. He faced criticism for dissolving the National Assembly in April 2022—a move the Supreme Court declared unconstitutional—and for withholding signatures on specific bills in 2023, leading to disputes over executive authority and constitutional duty.
