From legal practice to the federal cabinet, the rapid rise of Attaullah Tarar
In short: Attaullah Tarar has navigated a swift ascent through Pakistan's political landscape, moving from a legal career to the federal cabinet. As the current Minister for Information and Broadcasting, his tenure has been marked by significant controversy, high-stakes electoral battles, and intense public scrutiny regarding his conduct and official statements.
Born into a prominent Punjabi Jat family with deep ties to the Pakistan Muslim League (N), Tarar is the grandson of Muhammad Rafiq Tarar, who served as President of Pakistan from 1998 to 2001. Following an LLB degree from the University of London, he initially practiced law before fully committing to his political career. His rise within the party was rapid, serving as Deputy Secretary-General and eventually securing a seat in the National Assembly during the 2024 general election. This victory, however, remains contested by his opponent, Malik Zaheer Abbas, who has alleged irregularities in the handling of election documents.
Tarar’s time in office has frequently intersected with public discord. In 2022, he faced backlash for an offensive gesture directed toward the Punjab Assembly while holding the national constitution, an act for which he later issued an apology. His administrative roles have also drawn fire; in 2024, he was criticized for acting as a personal photographer for Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif during an official visit to Iran. Furthermore, his career has been punctuated by legal and ethical accusations, including a 2021 incident involving a forced entry into a rival candidate's home and a 2022 legal notice regarding alleged defamatory remarks.
The most severe scrutiny surrounds his role in the government's response to political unrest. During the November 2024 protests, Tarar suggested the potential use of military force against demonstrators. The subsequent crackdown resulted in numerous casualties and reports of missing persons, events the government has defended while facing accusations of excessive violence and misinformation. By May 2025, during a period of heightened tension between India and Pakistan, Tarar claimed that Indian forces had surrendered at the Line of Control. This assertion was widely dismissed by international observers and Indian media as a baseless misinformation campaign, as no evidence supported the existence of the specific locations or events he described.
