In short: Formed from the remnants of the Yugoslav People's Army in 1992, the Army of Republika Srpska became a formidable, albeit controversial, military power. Led by General Ratko Mladić, this force defined the Bosnian War, leaving a complex legacy that eventually led to its integration into a unified national military.

The Army of Republika Srpska (VRS) emerged on May 12, 1992, shortly after Bosnia and Herzegovina seceded from the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Its foundation relied on 80,000 troops discharged from the Yugoslav People's Army, who retained their heavy weaponry and gained access to significant infrastructure. This transition provided the VRS with a substantial strategic advantage at the onset of the Bosnian War.

Under the command of General Ratko Mladić, the VRS was organized into specialized sectors, including intelligence, logistics, and morale. Experts often cite the Main Staff as the most professional and capable planning body among the conflict's participants. Beyond its core ethnic Serb membership, the army drew approximately 4,000 foreign volunteers, including fighters from Russia, Bulgaria, and Greece, motivated by religious or nationalist ties.

The VRS was involved in major combat operations throughout the war, including the prolonged encirclement of Sarajevo and the Srebrenica massacre. While it achieved numerous battlefield victories, its existence as a separate entity from the Army of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina complicated post-war civil-military relations. The two forces operated without a unified command until the integration process began in 2003.

By 2005, the military had begun deploying joint units alongside international coalition forces in Iraq. The final transition occurred on June 6, 2006, when the VRS was formally absorbed into the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina under the control of the national Ministry of Defence. This move effectively ended its status as an independent military organization.
