In short: From its origins as the Army of the Principality of Serbia in 1830, the Serbian Army has undergone profound transformations. Following the Great Retreat during World War I, it has evolved through various iterations, including the Royal Yugoslav Army and the Yugoslav People's Army, before returning to its current form in 2006.

The Serbian Army, known locally as the Kopnena vojska Srbije, serves as the largest component of the Serbian Armed Forces. Its primary mission is to defend the nation's sovereignty and territorial integrity against foreign hostiles. Beyond traditional defense, the army is also tasked with participating in peacekeeping operations and providing essential humanitarian aid and disaster relief.

Structurally, the army is composed of six brigades and six independent battalions that report directly to the Army Command. It also includes the River Flotilla, the Technical Overhauling Institute, and the Multinational Operations Training Centre. A significant operational responsibility involves the infantry battalions of the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th brigades, which secure the Ground Safety Zone. This zone stretches 384 kilometers in length and 5 kilometers in width along the administrative line between Serbia and Kosovo, managed through over 20 security checkpoints and camps.

As of 2025, the army maintains a diverse inventory of equipment to meet its mission requirements. This includes a significant number of tracked and wheeled vehicles, such as 325 BVP M-80 tracked infantry fighting vehicles and 108 BTR-80A amphibious armoured personnel carriers. The heavy artillery component is equally varied, featuring 24 Nora B-52 155 mm self-propelled howitzers and 20 PULS multiple rocket launchers, which are capable of being armed with Predator Hawk tactical ballistic missiles or EXTRA and ACCULAR artillery rockets.

The history of the force is marked by major shifts in political landscape. Following its establishment in 1830, the force was renamed the Royal Serbian Army after the country gained independence. After the First World War, it was incorporated into the Royal Yugoslav Army, which was later transformed into the Yugoslav Ground Forces of the Yugoslav People's Army following the Second World War. The modern iteration of the Serbian Army has been active since 2006, following the restoration of Serbia's independence.
