Why this Brazilian coastal city is known as the Dubai of South America
In short: Balneário Camboriú is a high-density coastal hub in Santa Catarina, Brazil, famous for its record-breaking skyscrapers and massive seasonal population swings. Once a quiet settlement, it has transformed into a luxury real estate powerhouse, drawing affluent tourists and electronic music fans to its beaches and world-class nightlife venues.
Originally inhabited by the indigenous Tupi-Guaraní, the region saw European settlement begin in 1758. The area evolved through various administrative stages, eventually gaining autonomy as Balneário Camboriú in 1964. Its name remains a subject of debate; while some link it to a sharp bend in the local river, others point to Tupi linguistic roots. Today, the city is defined by its dramatic topography, where steep hills descend to the Atlantic, and a skyline dominated by some of the tallest residential buildings in the southern hemisphere.
The city’s rapid development is driven by a real estate market where beachfront high-rises can command prices up to US$10,000 per square meter. This vertical growth, enabled by permissive urban planning, has earned it the moniker 'Brazilian Dubai.' However, this density creates significant infrastructure challenges. During the summer, the population swells from approximately 139,155 residents to over one million, placing immense strain on water supplies and municipal services. Traffic congestion is a year-round reality, as the city relies heavily on the BR-101 highway for access.
Beyond its architecture, Balneário Camboriú has established itself as a global destination for electronic music. In 2012, Forbes highlighted the city as Brazil’s 'capital of e-music,' anchored by the Green Valley club, which has been repeatedly named the top nightclub in the world by DJ Magazine. The city also offers unique cultural landmarks, such as the 33-meter-tall Cristo Luz statue and the historic 1810 Capela de Santo Amaro, which was constructed using a mixture of mortar and whale oil. Whether through its diverse beaches, including Brazil's first official nudist beach, or its vibrant nightlife, the city remains a critical, if crowded, node in South American tourism.
