In short: Before he was an award-winning actor, Barkhad Abdi was selling phones in a Minnesota mall. His journey from a childhood in war-torn Mogadishu to the global stage of cinema is a story of unlikely discovery, beginning with a local casting call that changed his life forever.

Born in Mogadishu on April 10, 1985, Barkhad Abdi’s early life was shaped by the onset of the Somali Civil War. Around age six or seven, he relocated to Yemen to join his father, a teacher, before the family immigrated to the United States in 1999. They eventually settled in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where Abdi graduated from Roosevelt High School in 2003 and later attended Minnesota State University Moorhead. Before his cinematic breakthrough, he held various jobs, including working as a DJ, driving a limousine for a relative’s company, and selling mobile phones at his brother’s shop.

Abdi’s entry into the film industry was as unconventional as his background. In 2011, he attended a casting call in Minneapolis, where he was selected from over 700 participants to play the pirate leader Abduwali Muse in the 2013 film Captain Phillips. The casting director described the group of chosen actors as those who simply stood out. Despite earning $65,000 for the role and receiving a British Academy Film Award for Best Supporting Actor, along with nominations for an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, and a Screen Actors Guild Award, Abdi returned to his brother’s shop immediately after filming. His performance marked his first professional experience in the industry.

Following his debut, Abdi established a consistent career in both film and television. His credits include roles in Eye in the Sky, Good Time, The Pirates of Somalia, and Blade Runner 2049, all released in 2017. He has also appeared in television series such as the second season of Hulu’s Castle Rock in 2019 and the 2023 satirical comedy The Curse. Beyond acting, Abdi has explored directing, including the Somali film Ciyaalka Xaafada and various music videos. In 2013, he was also appointed as an ambassador for Adeso, an organization focused on environmental and humanitarian efforts founded by Fatima Jibrell.
