In short: In the heart of Lima stands the Basilica and Convent of San Pedro, a Jesuit site completed in 1638. Beyond its religious significance and royal wedding history, the church serves as a final resting place for powerful colonial figures, including one viceroy remembered for his surprising acts of public humility.

Originally established as the Basilica of Saint Paul, the site was intrinsically linked to the College of Saint Paul. Administered by the Jesuits, the church became a central fixture of the Archdiocese of Lima. While it remains a place of veneration for the Sacred Heart of Jesus, its historical weight is perhaps most visible in the notable individuals interred within its walls.

Among those buried here is Ambrosio O'Higgins, who served as the Viceroy of Peru from 1796 to 1801. Even more curious is the presence of the heart of Pedro Antonio Fernández de Castro, the 10th Count of Lemos, who governed as Viceroy between 1667 and 1672. The Count was known for his intense devotion to the Church of Our Lady of the Forsaken, a building demolished in 1937. Despite his high office, he was frequently observed performing the humble task of sweeping the street outside that church, a testament to his personal piety that contrasted sharply with his political station.

The basilica continues to be a site of modern significance, bridging centuries of history. In March 2018, it served as the venue for the royal wedding of Prince Christian of Hanover and Alessandra de Osma. The site's enduring legacy is documented in works such as the 1907 collection regarding its relics and the 1963 study on Jesuit art by Rubén Vargas Ugarte, which highlight how this space has functioned as both a spiritual sanctuary and a repository of colonial memory for nearly four centuries.
