In short: Perched in the Lombardy hills, Bergamo is a city of two distinct worlds. Its medieval upper core, protected by massive Venetian walls, contrasts with a bustling modern plain. Beyond its architecture, this city birthed the postal service and served as a pivotal staging ground for Italy's unification and cultural resilience.

Bergamo’s history is a layered narrative of strategic importance. Originally settled by the Orobii, the city was conquered by the Cenomani Celts around 550 BC before becoming a Roman municipality in 49 BCE. Its location on the military road between Friuli and Raetia made it a target, leading to its destruction by Attila in the 5th century. By the 6th century, it emerged as a significant Lombard duchy seat under Duke Wallaris.

The city’s influence extends into the mechanics of global history. In the 13th century, the Omodeo Tasso family fled local factional feuding, only to return and organize the city's couriers. This initiative eventually evolved into the Imperial Thurn und Taxis dynasty, credited with establishing the first modern postal system. Centuries later, the city’s role in the Italian unification movement earned it the title Città dei Mille, as many of the volunteers supporting Giuseppe Garibaldi’s 1859 expedition against the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies hailed from Bergamo.

Today, Bergamo is defined by its dual geography: the Città Alta, encircled by 16th-century Venetian defensive systems, and the modern Città Bassa. This historic core, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2017, houses architectural treasures like the 12th-century Palazzo della Ragione and the Renaissance Cappella Colleoni. While the city faced profound tragedy during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, it has since reclaimed its cultural prominence, being named an Italian Capital of Culture for 2023 alongside Brescia.
