A public magnet school built on a vocational framework
In short: Bergen County Academies began with a specific mission: preparing students for careers in math and science through technical, project-based learning. While it has since shifted toward a standard college-preparatory curriculum, its roots remain tied to the vocational models of the early 1990s.
Founded in 1991 by John Grieco, Bergen County Academies (BCA) serves students from ninth through twelfth grades across all of Bergen County, New Jersey. The institution was originally conceived as a tuition-free public magnet high school. It initially operated under a vocational framework designed to foster problem-solving and technical skills in math and science fields. The founder of this institution also established the public magnet high school Academies at Englewood. This initial vision sought to create a unique learning environment for students in New Jersey.
The school's expansion began shortly after its inception. In 1992, the first group of students entered 'The Academy for the Advancement of Science and Technology,' which shared a campus with what is now the Bergen County Technical High School. By 1997, the campus expanded to include three new academies, followed by three career institutes in 1998 that were later renamed as academies. These original career institutes were renamed into full academies just one year after they first opened their doors. The campus eventually grew to house seven distinct programs.
Over time, the school's educational philosophy evolved. While it started with a heavy emphasis on vocational training, it transitioned to a liberal arts curriculum focused on college preparation. Today, the campus hosts seven distinct academies covering diverse fields such as culinary arts, medical science technology, and visual and performing arts. The current academic offerings include specialized tracks like the Academy for Business and Finance and the Academy for Technology and Computer Science. These subjects allow students to explore specific professional interests while pursuing a broader liberal arts education.
Current enrollment data for the 2024-2025 school year shows that approximately 110 students are eligible for free and reduced-price lunch programs. The school maintains a student-teacher ratio of about 12.2:1, with roughly 93 classroom teachers serving an enrollment of 1,130 students. Data from the 2024-2025 school year indicates that about 8.7% of the student body qualifies for free lunch. Additionally, roughly 1.1% of the total enrollment is eligible for reduced-cost meal assistance.
