In short: The bet365 Stadium in Stoke-on-Trent is more than just a home for football. Built on the site of a closed coal mine, it serves as the final resting place for club icon Sir Stanley Matthews, whose ashes were buried beneath the pitch to honor his enduring legacy in the sport.

The stadium, which opened in 1997 as the Britannia Stadium, was constructed to replace the aging Victoria Ground, where the club had played for 115 years. The project cost approximately £14.7 million and was completed in about ten months on the grounds of the former Stafford No.2 Colliery, which had ceased operations in 1969. The move was driven by the requirements of the January 1990 Taylor Report, which mandated all-seater facilities for professional football clubs.

The stadium's opening was initially marred by severe traffic congestion due to poor access planning, which forced spectators to travel over a mile to a roundabout to double back. These logistical issues were eventually addressed through infrastructure projects, including a 2006 bridge installation and a 2010 underpass. Over the years, the venue has evolved significantly. While it initially held 27,500 spectators, expansion works completed in 2017 increased the capacity to 30,089. The club has continued to modernize the facility, including a £20 million refurbishment project launched in 2022 and the installation of LED floodlights in 2023.

Beyond its primary role as the home of Stoke City, the stadium has hosted international youth matches and various entertainment events, including concerts by artists such as Elton John and Rod Stewart. The site remains deeply connected to the club's history; Sir Stanley Matthews, who officially opened the ground in 1997 at age 82, had his ashes interred under the centre circle following his death in 2000. Today, the venue operates under a naming-rights agreement with bet365, though it is referred to as the Stoke City Stadium during UEFA competitions due to strict sponsorship regulations.
