A mosque so large it pushed 15th-century engineering to its breaking point
In short: Timur’s vision for a monumental mosque in Samarkand was so ambitious that it nearly collapsed under its own weight. To achieve his aesthetic goals, architects invented a hollow-space construction technique, creating a visual paradox where the interior and exterior of the building functioned as two entirely different structures.
Commissioned by Saray Mulk Khanum and built between 1399 and 1405, the Bibi-Khanym Mosque was a centerpiece of the Timurid Renaissance. Its scale was unprecedented; the courtyard was designed to accommodate the entire male population of Samarkand for Friday prayers. The site measures 167 meters in length and 109 meters in width, featuring a massive 35-meter-high parade portal and a monumental dome rising 40 meters above a square base. To reconcile the desire for a high, visible exterior dome with a more intimate interior, architects employed a sophisticated two-fold construction. A void was fashioned between the exterior cupola and the ceiling inside. This design ensured the interior hall reached 30 metres above the mihrab for aesthetic balance, whereas the outer dome's scale was adjusted to achieve peak visual grandeur. This innovation also allowed smaller lateral structures to appear as tower-like figures with ribbed, melon-shaped domes. However, this pursuit of grandeur came at a cost. The rushed construction and the sheer scale of the plans pushed the building techniques of the era to their limits. Structural integrity issues appeared almost immediately, with bricks falling from the dome over the mihrab just a few years after completion. Following a series of restorations, the mosque fell into decay in the late 16th century when Abdullah Khan II cancelled all repair works. It endured centuries of weathering, earthquakes—including a major one in 1897—and looting for building materials until major Soviet and modern restorations began.
