The Indian pilot who flew secret missions for Indonesia and the Soviet Union
In short: Biju Patnaik was an aviator who lived a life of high-stakes espionage and political maneuvering. From airlifting troops into Kashmir to orchestrating secret evacuations for Indonesian leaders, he operated in the shadows of global conflict, eventually becoming a pivotal figure in the industrial transformation of his home state, Odisha.
Born in 1916, Biju Patnaik was a man of extraordinary contradictions: an aristocratic businessman, a skilled pilot, and a fierce nationalist. During the Second World War, he served as a pilot for the Royal Indian Air Force and Indian National Airways, flying transport aircraft through dangerous war zones. His contributions were significant enough that he was awarded the Order of Lenin by the Soviet Union for his logistical support to the Red Army during the Battle of Stalingrad, and he later received the Jubilee Medal for his wartime efforts.
Patnaik’s aviation skills were frequently deployed for political ends. In 1947, at the request of Jawaharlal Nehru, he flew a daring, secret mission into Indonesia to rescue Prime Minister Sjahrir and other leaders from Dutch-controlled territory, using fuel from abandoned Japanese military dumps. This act cemented his status as a hero in Indonesia, earning him the Bhoomi Putra award and the honorary title 'Son of the Soil'. His influence was such that he famously suggested the name 'Megawati'—meaning daughter of clouds—for the future Indonesian president, Megawati Sukarnoputri.
Beyond his international exploits, Patnaik was a titan of Odisha’s development. Serving twice as chief minister, he championed massive industrialization, establishing projects like the Paradip Port and the National Aluminum Company. His vision was rooted in a desire to recapture the historical greatness of Kalinga through intelligence and self-reliance. Even after his death in 1997, his legacy remains visible in the institutions he founded and the international honors he received, including a coffin draped in the flags of India, Russia, and Indonesia.
