How a small 2005 startup became the engine of a global empire
In short: BigHit Music is now synonymous with global K-pop dominance, but its journey began as a modest label in 2005. From navigating complex joint management deals to undergoing a massive corporate spin-off in 2021, the company's evolution reveals the strategic mechanics behind building a modern entertainment powerhouse.
Founded on February 1, 2005, by Bang Si-hyuk, Big Hit Entertainment spent its early years navigating the intricacies of the South Korean music industry. The label initially operated through various collaborative structures, such as joint management contracts with JYP Entertainment for the boy group 2AM and co-management agreements with Source Music for groups like 8Eight and Glam. These partnerships were foundational in establishing the company's presence before it began to cultivate its own distinct roster.
The label's trajectory was marked by significant transitions and challenges. It managed a diverse array of talent, including soloists like Lim Jeong-hee and K.Will, as well as groups that eventually disbanded or moved on due to contract expirations or controversies—such as the 2014 disbandment of Glam following a legal scandal involving one of its members. A pivotal shift occurred in 2018 when the company debuted Tomorrow X Together, signaling a move toward the high-profile group branding that defines its current era.
In 2021, the organization underwent a massive structural transformation to accommodate its rapid growth. On March 19, 2021, the parent entity was renamed Hybe Corporation to reflect a broader scope of business ventures. Subsequently, on July 1, 2021, BigHit Music was officially established as an independent subsidiary of Hybe. This corporate spin-off allowed the record label to focus specifically on its music business while Hybe managed the wider array of diverse interests that now surround the brand.
