How a regional Indian airport became a global leader in solar-powered aviation
In short: Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar has transformed from a modest domestic hub into a model of sustainability. By 2023, it achieved the status of India's first fully solar-powered airport. Beyond its green credentials, this critical Eastern Indian gateway is rapidly expanding to accommodate millions of international and domestic passengers.
Named after the former Chief Minister of Odisha, Biju Patnaik International Airport serves as the primary aviation gateway for the state capital. Originally dedicated to the public in April 1962, the facility has evolved significantly, particularly after receiving international status in October 2013. Today, it functions as a vital civil aviation hub, managing a complex mix of domestic and international traffic through its integrated terminal infrastructure.
The airport's commitment to sustainability is a defining feature of its modern operations. In September 2013, management launched a green energy initiative with a 100KW rooftop solar plant. This effort culminated in May 2023 with the opening of a 4MW ground-mounted solar facility, allowing the entire airport to operate on renewable energy. These efforts earned the airport the Odisha State Energy Conservation Award in 2019 and a Level-2 Carbon Reduction certification in 2020.
Infrastructure growth remains a priority to meet rising demand. In June 2022, the airport expanded its apron to 24 bays, the largest in Eastern India, to support increased flight operations. Plans are currently underway for Terminal 3, a massive 65,000-square-metre facility designed to handle 8.6 million passengers annually. This expansion aims to alleviate congestion while showcasing Odisha's cultural heritage through its design, reflecting the airport's dual role as a transport hub and a regional cultural ambassador.
Beyond commercial flights, the airport serves strategic functions, including hosting the Indian Coast Guard's 743 Dornier Squadron, commissioned in December 2014. Despite challenges, such as the suspension of international routes during the COVID-19 pandemic, the airport has shown resilience. It successfully relaunched international cargo operations in January 2024, marking a new chapter in its connectivity with global destinations like Dubai, Singapore, and Bangkok.
