How a small Montana airfield became the busiest airport in the state
In short: Originally opened in 1941 as Gallatin Field, this Montana airport has transformed into a major gateway for travelers. By rebranding to leverage proximity to Yellowstone National Park and aggressively expanding its nonstop routes, it surpassed regional rivals to become the busiest commercial facility in the state of Montana.
Located in unincorporated Gallatin County, the airport sits eight miles northwest of Bozeman. It began operations in 1941 under the name Gallatin Field, welcoming its first official passenger in 1942. For decades, it served as a regional hub, undergoing significant upgrades in the late 1960s—including a runway extension to 9,000 feet—to accommodate the arrival of jet service. The facility covers 2,481 acres at an elevation of 4,473 feet, currently operating with four distinct runways.
The airport's modern trajectory shifted in 2011 when the Gallatin Airport Authority rebranded the facility as Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport. This strategic move aimed to capitalize on the global recognition of Yellowstone National Park. That same year, a terminal expansion added three gates and new retail space. By 2012, the facility opened a U.S. Customs and Border Protection office, allowing for international flights. These efforts paid off in 2013, when the airport officially overtook Billings Logan as Montana's busiest passenger hub.
Growth has continued at a rapid pace, driven by rising leisure demand. Between 2020 and 2025, the airport expanded its offerings to a record 31 nonstop destinations, attracting major carriers like Southwest Airlines. To maintain this momentum, the airport announced a $180-million infrastructure project in 2024. This initiative, described as the largest in Montana history, includes plans for a second security checkpoint and additional baggage carousels. Expected to conclude within 4.5 years, the project underscores the airport's evolution from a local field into a critical piece of regional infrastructure.
