How a small resort town club reached the pinnacle of Turkish professional football
In short: For decades, Bodrum FK was a modest amateur side rooted in a quiet coastal town. Today, it stands as the first club from Muğla Province to compete in the Süper Lig. This rapid ascent from regional obscurity to Turkey’s top flight highlights a remarkable transformation in infrastructure and ambition.
Founded in 1931 by local footballer Derviş Görgün, the club spent the vast majority of its existence in regional amateur leagues. It was not until 1995 that the team first entered the professional ranks. The club's modern trajectory began in earnest during the early 2010s, when municipal backing helped stabilize the organization. By 2014–15, the team had successfully climbed from the Regional Amateur League back into the professional 3. Lig, setting the stage for a decade of aggressive growth.
The club's rise through the tiers was marked by critical victories in high-stakes play-offs. In 2021–22, a 3–0 win against Karacabey Belediyespor secured their place in the TFF 1. Lig. After a narrow defeat in the 2023 play-off final, the club rebranded as Bodrum Futbol Kulübü. This corporate evolution culminated on 31 May 2024, when they defeated Sakaryaspor 3–1 after extra time at the Atatürk Olympic Stadium, officially securing their debut in the Süper Lig for the 2024–25 season.
Central to this achievement was the modernization of the Bodrum İlçe Stadyumu. Originally built between 2012 and 2014, the venue required significant upgrades to meet the stringent licensing criteria of the Turkish Football Federation. Improvements to seating, technical facilities, and floodlighting were essential to bring the stadium up to top-flight standards. Today, the club operates as a joint-stock company, with leadership transitioning in June 2025 from long-time backer Fikret Öztürk to the new chairman, Aşkın Demir, as the club continues to cement its identity through its green-and-white colours and maritime-themed crest.
