How a Croatian coach transformed Indonesian football by securing three consecutive league championships
In short: Bojan Hodak, a Zagreb-born tactician, redefined success in Southeast Asian football. After a career spanning Malaysia, Cambodia, and China, he arrived at Persib Bandung in 2023. He inherited a struggling squad in the relegation zone and led them to an unprecedented three straight league titles before transitioning to a technical advisory role.
Born in 1971, Bojan Hodak initially balanced football and basketball in Zagreb before committing fully to the pitch at age 16. His coaching journey began in 2006 with Malaysia's UPB-MyTeam, where he focused on developing young talent. Over the following years, he built a reputation for turning around struggling clubs and securing historic trophies, including a treble with Kelantan in 2012 and a Malaysia Cup victory with Kuala Lumpur City in 2021, which ended a 32-year drought for the club.
Hodak's most significant impact occurred in Indonesia after he joined Persib Bandung in July 2023. At the time, the team occupied 16th place in the 18-team league. Hodak quickly stabilized the squad, guiding them to the championship series and eventually winning the 2023–24 title. This victory was historic, as he became the first coach from outside the country to claim the league crown. He was also named the season's top coach, an honor he would repeat in the following two campaigns.
The momentum continued as Hodak led Persib to back-to-back championships in 2024–25, matching a record previously held only by Indra Thohir. By the 2025–26 season, he secured a third consecutive title on the final matchday, clinching the championship through a superior head-to-head record against Borneo Samarinda. Following this unprecedented run of success, Hodak stepped down as head coach in May 2026 to serve as the club's technical advisor, leaving behind a legacy of sustained dominance in the Indonesian top flight.
Throughout his career, Hodak has demonstrated an ability to adapt to diverse footballing environments, from the youth level with Malaysia's U-19 squad to high-stakes professional leagues. His tenure at Persib Bandung is particularly noted for its consistency, as evidenced by his multiple Coach of the Month awards between 2023 and 2026. His transition to a technical advisory role marks the end of a highly decorated period of leadership that reshaped the competitive landscape of the league.
