From K-pop idol to award-winning actress: the evolution of Bona
In short: Bona’s trajectory from a trainee to a household name illustrates the high-stakes transition between the idol industry and prestige television. While many debut in music, her ability to anchor high-rated dramas has redefined her public identity, moving her from a group member to a leading actress.
Bona, born Kim Ji-yeon on August 19, 1995, in Daegu, South Korea, began her professional journey as a trainee under Cube Entertainment. In 2013, she moved to Starship Entertainment, eventually debuting as a member of the girl group WJSN and its sub-unit WJSN The Black. Her musical debut occurred on February 25, 2016, with the mini-album Would You Like? and the single "MoMoMo."
While her musical career provided a foundation, her transition into acting began in earnest in 2017 with the KBS2 drama Hit the Top. She attended high school in Daegu before her professional training. The group she joined also features a specific sub-unit called WJSN The Black.
She quickly moved into leading roles, such as the female lead in Girls' Generation 1979 in 2018. A significant turning point came in 2020 with the KBS2 drama Homemade Love Story, where her performance as Lee Hae-deun earned her the Best New Actress award at the 2020 KBS Drama Awards. She appeared in a cameo for Radio Romance during 2018. Additionally, she took on a second lead role in a production titled Your House Helper.
Bona’s mainstream prominence reached a peak in 2022 with the tvN series Twenty-Five Twenty-One. She acted with Nam Joo-hyuk and Kim Tae-ri in a cable television production that achieved record-breaking viewership for Korea, depicting a gold medalist fencer who is also a world champion. This success allowed her to transition into more diverse roles, including a historical legal revenge drama in 2023 and the 2024 series Pyramid Game, where she began performing under her full name, Kim Ji-yeon. She also appeared in a reality show set in the Northern Mariana Islands. In her 2024 role, she portrayed a student at Baekyeon Girls' High School.
