The Detroit athlete who gained 40 pounds only to find success by losing it
In short: Brandon Graham's path to the NFL wasn't a straight line of physical perfection. After a high school rule violation forced him into an athletic hiatus, he gained significant weight before discovering that his true dominance on the field came from shedding those extra pounds.
Born in Detroit and raised in a community where high school football fields lacked lights—forcing parents to shine car headlights for late practices—Brandon Graham was a standout multi-sport athlete. As a junior at Crockett Vocational Tech, he served as a versatile playmaker, acting as a linebacker, offensive guard, placekicker, and punter. His versatility led his team to an MHSAA state championship and earned him first-team All-Detroit honors in 2004.
Graham's trajectory hit a major hurdle in 2006 when he became the first Michigan athlete to participate in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. Due to his participation in an out-of-state all-star game, Michigan state regulations were breached, forcing him to forfeit high school sports eligibility throughout the winter and spring periods. While sidelined by this mandatory break, Graham consumed too much food and put on 40 pounds (18 kg). This weight gain shifted his recruitment from linebacker to defensive end.
The transition was pivotal. As he lost the excess weight, Graham realized he could excel at a lighter frame. He arrived at the University of Michigan in 2006 weighing 295 pounds (134 kg) and 6 feet 2 inches tall. After switching to defensive end before his freshman season, he became a dominant force for the Wolverines. By 2008, he led the Big Ten Conference with 20 tackles for loss in just 11 games, eventually leading the team as their Most Valuable Player.
Graham's journey culminated in a 16-season career with the Philadelphia Eagles. He is noted for his pivotal role in Super Bowl LII, where he recorded a strip sack on Tom Brady during the closing minutes to secure the franchise's first championship. He remains the player who has played more games and seasons for the Eagles than any other individual in team history.
