In short: Before he was a first-round NFL draft pick, Corey Davis faced a precarious future. Lacking scholarships and struggling in the classroom, his path to professional football relied on a transformative move into a new family and a dedicated tutor.

Corey Davis’s ascent to the NFL was far from guaranteed. Growing up in Wheaton, Illinois, as the second youngest of seven siblings, Davis faced significant academic and financial hurdles. During his first three years of high school, he struggled with his schoolwork, and he did not secure any athletic scholarships until late in his senior year. His trajectory changed when he moved from his family's two-bedroom apartment to live with the Graham family, the son of former Tampa Bay Buccaneer Dan Graham. The Grahams became his legal guardians and provided a personal tutor to ensure his GPA remained high enough to qualify for NCAA eligibility.

This support paved the way for a historic collegiate career at Western Michigan University. Davis became a prolific force in the Mid-American Conference, setting school freshman records in 2013 with 67 receptions for 941 yards. His production escalated annually, culminating in a landmark performance on November 25, 2016, against the Toledo Rockets. On that night, he surpassed Nevada's Trevor Insley to become the all-time NCAA Division I FBS leader in career receiving yards, earning the conference Offensive Player of the Year honors.

The Tennessee Titans selected Davis fifth overall in the 2017 NFL Draft, awarding him a fully guaranteed four-year, $25.39 million contract. His professional career was marked by both brilliance and physical adversity. While he recorded standout moments, such as a game-winning touchdown against the Philadelphia Eagles and a career-high 182-yard game against the Cleveland Browns, he frequently battled injuries, including hamstring, hip, and core muscle issues. After a stint with the New York Jets, Davis announced a break from football in August 2023, eventually entering free agency in 2024.
