From high school star to the fifth overall NFL draft pick
In short: In just three years, Mason Graham transformed from a four-star recruit into a unanimous All-American. After dominating the college ranks with the Michigan Wolverines, the defensive tackle has now entered the professional arena, proving that elite physical talent can accelerate a path to the top of the NFL.
Mason Graham’s ascent through the ranks of American football is marked by rapid, high-impact progression. A native of Mission Viejo, California, Graham first gained national attention at Servite High School, where he was a standout in both football and wrestling. By December 2021, he was recognized as the High School Football Player of the Year by the Los Angeles Times, following a senior season that featured 14 sacks and 22 tackles for a loss.
His collegiate career at the University of Michigan, which began in 2022, was defined by immediate dominance. As a true freshman, he recorded his first career sack against Colorado State and earned a spot on the Pro Football Focus True Freshman All-America team. His sophomore campaign in 2023 saw him earn first-team All-Big Ten honors and a defensive MVP title in the Rose Bowl, contributing to Michigan's 34–13 victory over Washington to secure the College Football Playoff National Championship.
By his junior season, Graham was regarded as the premier interior defensive lineman in college football. His 2024 season was particularly decorated, earning him unanimous All-American honors and making him a finalist for both the Bronko Nagurski Trophy and the Outland Trophy. This decorated amateur career culminated in the 2025 NFL Draft, where the Cleveland Browns selected him with the fifth overall pick in the first round, following a trade-down from the third position.
