A heavy metal fantasy world born from a roadie's blood
In short: In the world of Brütal Legend, a freak accident during a gig transforms a simple roadie into a prophesied savior. Inspired by heavy metal album art, this 40-square-mile landscape is a surreal battleground where music is literally a weapon of war.
The game's mythology begins when Eddie Riggs, a roadie for the band Kabbage Boy, is crushed by falling scenery during a performance. His blood lands on his belt buckle—an amulet for the deity Ormagöden—triggering a transformation that transports him to a heavy metal–themed fantasy world. This unexpected transition occurs when the stage is physically transformed by the deity. This event marks the beginning of Eddie's journey through this strange dimension.
This unnamed realm is shaped by the mythical figure Ormagöden, known as the Eternal Firebeast and Destroyer of the Ancient World. In this landscape, humanity is enslaved by demons led by Doviculus, the Emperor of the Tainted Coil. The world serves as a massive, 40-square-mile open world where players navigate via a customizable hot rod known as 'The Deuce'. The landscape is home to various factions, including the industrial-themed Tainted Coil. Players can also encounter the Ironheade faction, which is primarily composed of humans.
The narrative tension centers on Eddie's role as a potential 'Chosen One.' While he possesses the rare ability to comprehend the writings of the Titans, a dispute regarding the translation of these messages leaves his true purpose uncertain: is he destined to be the world's savior or its destroyer? The protagonist's ability to understand ancient Titan scripts is a key plot element. This unique skill distinguishes him from other inhabitants of the realm.
Combat and exploration are driven by musical mechanics. Players use 'Clementine,' a Flying V guitar, to cast magical 'Solos' that function like note-matching minigames. These spells can trigger pyrotechnics or massive environmental shifts, such as the 'Earthshaker' move used to destroy heavy weights in boss encounters. Beyond direct combat, players can engage in Stage Battles to defend their performers. These strategic encounters require commanding troops to protect a musical platform.
