In short: Nestled on the east bank of the Hudson River, Briarcliff Manor serves as a study in intentional preservation. It balances high-end residential growth with a commitment to protecting its historic character and vast open spaces, maintaining an affluent atmosphere that feels worlds away from the city it serves.

Briarcliff Manor was formally incorporated as a village in 1902, evolving from a small settlement of just 331 people into an affluent community of 7,569 residents by the 2020 U.S. Census. Its development was largely shaped in the 1890s by Walter William Law, who purchased land and established the village's foundational infrastructure, including schools, churches, parks, and the prominent Briarcliff Lodge.

The village is geographically unique, situated between the Hudson and Pocantico Rivers—a fact reflected in its motto. While it sits within both the Town of Ossining (where over 91% of residents reside) and the Town of Mount Pleasant, it maintains a distinct identity. A significant portion of the village, covering 376 acres, is part of the Scarborough Historic District, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.

More than 172 acres of active and passive parkland are held and managed by the Village as part of its conservation plan. This focus on open space complements its status as a historically wealthy enclave for families like the Vanderbilts, Astors, and Rockefellers. Today, it remains a low-crime residential hub, with a 2012 study ranking it as having the second-lowest crime rate in New York State.

Governance in Briarcliff Manor is structured around an elected Mayor and four Trustees, supported by a full-time Village Manager. The community emphasizes transparency through various channels, including a daily cable television update on Channel 78 for live Board of Trustees meetings and a newsletter titled "Manor of Speaking" to highlight local initiatives.
