How a childhood epilepsy diagnosis shaped one of basketball's most prolific scoring machines
In short: Told he would not survive past sixth grade due to a rare form of epilepsy, Bryce Cotton defied the odds to become a basketball icon. Today, he stands as one of the most decorated players in Australian National Basketball League history, boasting six league MVP awards and three championship titles.
Born in Tucson, Arizona, in 1992, Bryce Cotton faced a harrowing start. During fifth grade, doctors advised him to abandon football to avoid head injuries that could trigger seizures. Diagnosed with a rare form of epilepsy, his prognosis was grim; his mother was told to prepare for his funeral. Yet, Cotton experienced his final seizure on the last day of sixth grade. Though he required medication for several years, he eventually recovered fully, allowing him to focus entirely on his basketball ambitions.
Cotton’s path to professional success was unconventional. After an undrafted exit from the 2014 NBA draft, he endured short stints with the Utah Jazz, Phoenix Suns, and Memphis Grizzlies, alongside time in the NBA Development League and international leagues in China, Turkey, and Italy. His career truly ignited in 2017 when he joined the Perth Wildcats in Australia. His impact was immediate: he led the team to an NBL championship in his first season, earning Grand Final MVP honors. This marked the beginning of a dominant run that saw him claim six NBL Most Valuable Player awards between 2018 and 2026.
Beyond his scoring prowess—which includes nine NBL scoring titles—Cotton has become a central figure in Australian basketball. In 2025, he became an Australian citizen and subsequently debuted for the national team. His transition to the Adelaide 36ers in 2025 continued his streak of excellence, as he collected his sixth league MVP in the 2025–26 season. Now within one award of Andrew Gaze’s all-time record of seven league MVPs, Cotton’s journey from a childhood health crisis to becoming a nine-time All-NBL First Team recipient remains a testament to his resilience and work ethic.
