The Buick Encore was a global subcompact crossover with a complex international production history
In short: While the Buick Encore became a familiar sight on North American roads, its origins and manufacturing were truly global. From its shared architecture with European models to its assembly in South Korea and China, the vehicle represents a decade of shifting automotive strategies before its eventual discontinuation in 2022.
The Buick Encore entered the market in 2012 as the brand's fourth SUV, following the Rendezvous, Rainier, and Enclave. Developed by General Motors, the first-generation model was essentially a restyled version of the Chevrolet Trax, sharing its fundamental design with the European Opel/Vauxhall Mokka. This global DNA was reflected in its production: North American units were assembled at the GM Korea plant in Bupyeong, while the Chinese market version was produced in Shandong.
Over its decade-long lifespan, the Encore underwent several refinements. Early models from 2013 to 2015 featured a 1.4-liter turbo engine producing 128 horsepower. By 2016, Buick introduced a more powerful 153-horsepower Ecotec engine as part of a new Sport Touring trim. The 2017 model year brought significant aesthetic and technological updates, including revised bumpers, LED tail lights, and an 8-inch frameless infotainment screen, while the signature faux fender ports—known as VentiPorts—were removed after the 2016 model year.
The vehicle's later years were marked by the introduction of the larger Encore GX in 2020. While the original Encore remained in the lineup as an entry-level option, its trim levels were significantly condensed. By 2022, General Motors discontinued the first-generation Encore in North America, with the Envista serving as its eventual replacement. Interestingly, a second-generation Encore was revealed at the 2019 Shanghai Auto Show, but it was built on the GEM platform specifically for emerging markets and was never exported to North America, highlighting the distinct paths Buick took in different global regions.
