How a small agricultural town became a major Saudi Arabian commercial and military hub
In short: Once a quiet settlement of fewer than 50,000 people, Khamis Mushait has transformed into the fifth-largest city in Saudi Arabia. Today, it serves as a vital trading center and home to a massive military airbase, marking a dramatic shift from its origins as a regional agricultural market for the Shahran tribe.
Located in the Asir region, 884 kilometres from Riyadh, Khamis Mushait has undergone rapid expansion since the 1970s. Historically, the city functioned as a modest hub for the surrounding fertile lands, which benefited from a mild climate. By 2017, the metropolitan population had surged to an estimated 1,353,000 residents, cementing its status as a significant urban center in the kingdom, trailing only Riyadh, Jeddah, Mecca, and Medina in size.
The city's identity is deeply rooted in the Al-Mushayt family, specifically Mushayt Ibn Salem, the leader of the Shahran tribe who acted as the guardian of the local market. This historical connection to commerce persists today; the city is recognized as the fourth-largest trading center in Saudi Arabia. Visitors often frequent its traditional souks, such as the Khamis Souk and Silver Souq, which are renowned for their intricate silver jewellery and spice offerings.
Beyond its commercial significance, the city is home to the King Khalid Air Base, a facility with a 12,400-foot runway. Constructed by United States engineers during the 1960s and 1970s, the base features specialized service facilities for F-15 aircraft. Its strategic importance was highlighted during the 1991 Gulf War, when the United States Air Force utilized the location to launch bombing missions. Despite its modern industrial and military profile, the surrounding area remains defined by its agricultural output, set against a climate that fluctuates between hot desert and hot semi-desert conditions.
