In short: Club Deportivo Guadalajara, known as Chivas, holds a unique position in professional football. It is the only Mexican club that exclusively signs players of Mexican descent. This commitment to home-grown talent has defined its identity for over a century, fueling both its immense popularity and its fierce, storied rivalries.

Founded in 1906 as Unión Football Club, the team was initially a social project for employees of the Fábricas de Francia store. Its evolution into a national institution began in 1908 when founder Edgar Everaert, inspired by European clubs named after their home cities, renamed the team Club Deportivo Guadalajara. This shift was intended to foster deep loyalty within the local population, a goal that succeeded beyond expectations. Today, the club is one of the four most popular in Mexico, with a 2016 study finding that 44.2% of the country's football supporters identified as Chivas fans.

The club's 'Mexican-only' policy is its most defining characteristic. By relying on its cantera, or youth academy, Chivas has served as the launching pad for internationally successful stars like Javier Hernández and Carlos Vela. This philosophy has not hindered its success; the club has won twelve Liga MX titles and is one of only seven Mexican teams that have never been relegated. Its golden era, known as El Campeonísimo, saw the team win four consecutive league championships between 1958 and 1962, an unprecedented feat in Mexican football history.

Despite its prestige, the club has faced significant turbulence. Financial struggles in the 1990s led to the creation of a special financial sector, and the team was eventually acquired in 2002 by entrepreneur Jorge Vergara. Under his ownership, the club modernized, constructing the Estadio Akron and aggressively marketing the Chivas brand. However, the club has also endured periods of mediocrity and frequent coaching changes. Most recently, in October 2024, the departure of manager Fernando Gago marked another chapter of transition for a club that remains, at its core, a symbol of national identity in a globalized sport.
