In short: Born in 1957 and named after India's first Vice President, C. P. Radhakrishnan has mirrored that namesake's path to the nation's second-highest office. His journey from a youth activist in Tamil Nadu to a multi-state governor and finally the 15th Vice President of India is a study in political endurance.

Chandrapuram Ponnusamy Radhakrishnan, born in Tiruppur on 4 May 1957, has spent decades within the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, later transitioning into the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) upon its 1980 founding. His early political career was defined by his representation of Coimbatore in the Lok Sabha, where he secured victories in the 1998 and 1999 general elections. His 1998 win, occurring in the wake of the Coimbatore bombings, saw him defeat his opponent by a margin of 144,676 votes.

Following his parliamentary tenure, which concluded after a 2004 election defeat, Radhakrishnan remained a prominent figure in Tamil Nadu politics. As state president of the BJP from 2003 to 2006, he led a 93-day rath yatra across the state to advocate for river linkage and anti-terrorism measures. His administrative experience expanded significantly in the 2020s, serving as the chairman of the Coir Board of India from 2016 to 2020, followed by a series of gubernatorial appointments. Between 2023 and 2025, he held the governorships of Jharkhand, Telangana, and Maharashtra, while also serving as the Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry.

The culmination of his career arrived in 2025 following the resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar. Nominated by the National Democratic Alliance, Radhakrishnan faced B. Sudarshan Reddy in the vice presidential election. On 9 September 2025, he secured victory with 452 electoral votes, defeating Reddy by a margin of 116 votes. He was sworn in as the 15th Vice President of India on 12 September 2025, a position he holds today. His rise is often noted for the coincidence of his name, shared with Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the nation's first Vice President, whose second term began just one week after the younger Radhakrishnan's birth in 1957.
