A veteran politician's two-decade journey through Karnataka's complex political landscape and power shifts
In short: Siddaramaiah, a lawyer-turned-statesman, has defined Karnataka politics for decades. Serving twice as Chief Minister, he navigated shifting party alliances and major financial scandals. From his humble roots in a farming family to the heights of state power, his career reflects the volatile, high-stakes nature of Indian regional governance.
Born in 1947 in a remote village, Siddaramaiah rose from a background in law and teaching to become a dominant force in Karnataka politics. His career began in 1983 when he entered the state assembly, eventually holding diverse ministerial roles ranging from animal husbandry to finance. He is notable for being only the second Chief Minister in the state's history to complete a full five-year term, a feat he achieved during his first tenure from 2013 to 2018.
His political journey is marked by significant transitions between parties, including the Janata Dal factions and the Indian National Congress. After joining Congress in 2006, he built a base among backward classes, leading the party to an absolute majority in 2013. However, his tenure has been shadowed by controversy. In 2024, his administration faced intense scrutiny over the alleged misappropriation of funds from the Valmiki Development Corporation, leading to the arrest of a cabinet minister. Simultaneously, he faced legal challenges regarding the allotment of residential plots to his wife by the Mysore Urban Development Authority.
Siddaramaiah's second term as Chief Minister, which began in 2023, concluded with his resignation on 28 May 2026, following a pre-arranged power-sharing agreement. Throughout his career, he has maintained a public image focused on scientific rationalism, often distancing himself from superstition. Despite his electoral successes, including nine assembly election victories, he remains a polarizing figure, currently facing numerous pending corruption cases within the Karnataka Lokayukta system. His legacy remains a subject of intense debate, balancing significant social welfare initiatives against persistent allegations of administrative irregularity.
