In short: Located near Oudtshoorn, South Africa, the Cango Caves are a massive subterranean network carved into Precambrian limestone. While visitors explore only a fraction of the tunnels, the system holds ancient artifacts, massive chambers, and legendary tales of explorers who once spent over a day searching for the cave's true end.

The Cango Caves have served as a human site since the Middle and Later Stone Ages, evidenced by prehistoric paintings and artifacts. While local farmer Jacobus Van Zyl is credited with their modern rediscovery in 1780, the site's true scale remained elusive for centuries. Van Zyl famously descended into a chamber now named in his honor, which spans the length of a football field. By 1829, the caves were already drawing scientific interest, with Dr. Andrew Smith visiting to study their unique geological features.

Exploration of the system has been a slow, incremental process. In 1898, the first official guide, Johnny van Wassenaer, reportedly spent 29 hours navigating the depths, claiming to reach a point 25 kilometers from the entrance. Modern surveys have since revealed a complex, multi-stage structure. Cango I, mapped in the mid-20th century, consists of a relatively linear path. Subsequent discoveries, including Cango II in 1972 and Cango III in 1975, expanded the known network significantly through the draining of underwater passages and the widening of obstructed crawlways.

Today, the caves are managed by the municipality of Oudtshoorn, with legal oversight rooted in the 1999 Cango Caves Ordinance. Visitors can choose between a standard tour or an adventure route, the latter of which requires navigating passages as narrow as 15 centimeters. Despite centuries of exploration, the caves continue to yield new secrets, with ongoing discoveries supporting the vast, interconnected nature of the system that early explorers like Van Wassenaer first dared to map.
