The river that fueled the nation's industrial revolution
In short: Deep in the Appalachian Mountains lies a gorge sculpted by water into the longest and deepest of its kind. While it is now a sanctuary for rare species, this landscape was once the engine of American industry, providing the coal and coke that powered the nation's trains and factories.
Established as a national river in 1978 and redesignated in 2020, the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve protects a 53-mile stretch of the New River. The landscape is defined by its unique geology, featuring over 1,000 feet of exposed sandstone and shale. The river's creative force has carved out a diverse aquatic ecosystem containing rare hydrologic features like torrents, chutes, and cascades that are uncommon in the Eastern United States.
The gorge's history is inextricably linked to the 'smokeless' New River coal. The river exposed four seams of some of the world's best bituminous coal, which fed the boilers of national fleets and power plants. This industrial legacy is still visible today in the ruins of over 50 company-owned towns, abandoned mine portals, and historic coke ovens. The arrival of the railroad in 1873 opened the region to the world, leading to the development of towns like Thurmond to support the lumbering and mining industries.
Today, the park serves as a critical biological corridor. Within central and southern Appalachia, this river gorge boasts the widest variety of plant life, featuring 40 distinct botanical communities. It provides essential habitat for endangered mammals, including the Virginia big-eared and Indiana bats, and 48 known species of amphibians, such as the eastern hellbender. The park also serves as a vital link in the north-south migratory flyway for thousands of hawks and various bird species that depend on its unfragmented forests for breeding.
