The Lion King: How Fernando Llorente conquered Europe's biggest stages
In short: Nicknamed 'El Rey León', the Spanish striker rose from Athletic Bilbao's youth ranks to become a decorated champion. From winning the 2010 World Cup to reaching the Champions League final, Llorente's career is a testament to clinical finishing and high-stakes impact across Europe's elite leagues.
Born in Pamplona and raised in Rincón de Soto, Fernando Llorente's journey to professional football began in the Athletic Bilbao youth system in 1996. After making his first-team debut in 2005, he became a cornerstone of the club, famously scoring 29 goals during the 2011–12 season. His prowess in European competition was particularly notable; he became the club's highest scorer in such tournaments, notably scoring twice against Schalke 04 during a run that saw Athletic reach a Europa League final.
Llorente's career was defined by his ability to perform in high-pressure environments. He was a vital member of the Spanish national squads that secured the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012 titles. His club career saw him navigate the complexities of top-tier football, including a successful stint at Juventus where he secured two Serie A titles, and a period at Tottenham Hotspur where he played a crucial role in their 2019 Champions League campaign.
His impact was often felt most acutely as a substitute or in critical moments. For instance, during Tottenham's 2018–19 Champions League run, he scored a vital winning goal in the quarter-final against Manchester City and helped orchestrate a remarkable comeback against Ajax. Despite facing injuries—including a fractured arm sustained while cycling in 2017—and contract disputes, the striker's career spanned major clubs like Sevilla, Swansea City, and Napoli, eventually concluding at the age of 38.
