The Colorado town built on rhyolite rather than gold
In short: While many settlers arrived in the American West chasing gold, Castle Rock found its fortune in stone. This Colorado municipality, named for a prominent castle-shaped butte, grew from a small settlement of prospectors and cowboys into a major hub within the Denver metropolitan area.
Founded in 1874 following the redrawing of the eastern Douglas County border, Castle Rock was established as the county seat due to its central location. While rumors of gold initially drew white settlers to the area via the Homestead Act of 1862, it was the discovery of rhyolite stone that ultimately drove the settlement's growth. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, a vigorous rhyolite-quarrying industry emerged, attracting many immigrants to the region.
The town's identity is deeply tied to its namesake geological feature, a butte located just north of the town center. In 1936, the town received a land donation that included this landmark. Soon after, WPA labourers built a star on the summit of the butte. This star was lit annually from 1936 to 1941, but was left unlit after the start of World War II as a symbol of sacrifice. After V-J Day on 14 August 1945, the star became a 'V-for-victory' icon and has been illuminated each festive period since roughly late 1945.
Today, Castle Rock is a significant part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood metropolitan area. As of the 2020 census, the town had a population of 73,158, representing a 51.68% increase from 2010. It is the most populous Colorado town and the 14th-most populous municipality in the state. The local economy is characterized by a professional workforce, with a median household income of $145,197 according to 2019–2023 estimates, nearly double the national median.
