In short: In 1948, a football program vanished due to a lack of veterans. Decades later, a transparent student vote and a massive fundraising campaign proved that the passion for the game had returned to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Initially operating under the name Charlotte Center of the University of North Carolina Owls, the university's first football squad had a brief existence. After a 2–4 season in 1946, the program ceased operations following the 1948 season, largely because fewer World War II veterans were entering college in the late 1940s. This era of football saw the team play home games at American Legion Memorial Stadium.

The modern era began with a grassroots movement. Starting in 2006, student leaders Benjamin Comstock and Jordan Van Dyne initiated a transparent process, including an online poll that informed students of potential tuition increases. This student-led momentum, supported by the Charlotte 49er Football Initiative, eventually led the Board of Trustees to officially vote for a new program on November 13, 2008.

Rebuilding the program required significant capital. Chancellor Dubois stipulated that fans must raise $5 million to fund the stadium complex. The university utilized 'Forty Niner Seat Licenses' (FSLs) to generate support; while the goal was 5,000 reservations within six months, the target was met in just two months. This fundraising, alongside a debt service fee approved by the board of governors in 2010, paved the way for the stadium's completion in 2012.

The 49ers officially began play in the 2013 NCAA Division I FCS season, later moving to the FBS subdivision and joining Conference USA in 2015. Since their return, the program has navigated various coaching eras, from the inaugural head coach Brad Lambert to more recent leaders like Will Healy and Francis 'Biff' Poggi, as they continue to establish their presence in college football.
