In short: What began in the 1870s as a simple beach resort evolved into a global powerhouse. Through strategic acquisitions and massive mergers, Cedar Fair transformed from a single Ohio destination into the largest amusement park operator in North America, eventually merging with its greatest rival to reshape the industry.

The origins of the Cedar Fair empire can be traced back to the 1870s, when the flagship Cedar Point park operated as a bathing beach resort. The site's growing popularity led to the formation of the Cedar Point Pleasure Resort Company in 1887. However, the venture faced significant instability during the economic depression of the 1890s, nearly threatening the resort's future until George Arthur Boeckling and the Cedar Point Pleasure Resort Company of Indiana purchased the property for $256,000 in 1897. Following this acquisition, the business was later reorganised as the G.A. Boeckling Company.

Under Boeckling's leadership, which lasted until 1931, the resort thrived, setting the stage for a massive corporate expansion. In 1983, the Cedar Fair Limited Partnership was formed following the acquisition of Valleyfair, a name that provided the company's dual identity. In 2023, roughly 26.7 million visitors attended its parks, making the firm the world's seventh-largest amusement park operator by headcount. The company's name was derived from its two primary locations: Cedar Point and Valleyfair. It also went public on the stock market in April 1987.

The company's growth was driven by aggressive acquisitions, including Knott's Berry Farm in 1997 and a $1.24 billion purchase of the Paramount Parks chain in 2006. This era of expansion culminated in a transformative shift in the industry. In November 2023, Cedar Fair announced a merger with its competitor, Six Flags. This massive consolidation resulted in a combined portfolio featuring 27 amusement parks and 15 water parks. Former Cedar Fair shareholders maintained a 51.2% majority stake in the new corporation.
