In short: In the late 1980s, a massive film studio project collapsed after several box office failures. Yet, from the ruins of these dismantled sets, Australia's only film-themed theme park emerged, transforming a swampy lot into a massive entertainment precinct that draws millions of visitors annually.

The origins of Warner Bros. Movie World are rooted in the financial volatility of the 1980s film industry. In 1986, producer Dino De Laurentiis began building a studio in Oxenford, Queensland, intended to produce films like Total Recall. After various cinematic failures like Million Dollar Mystery, De Laurentiis withdrew from his company in December 1987. This left $3.4 million worth of studio sets to be dismantled, creating a massive real estate opportunity for Village Roadshow. The studio's collapse occurred after several box office bombs jeopardised the company's finances. This failure ultimately led to the dismantling of expensive production sets.

The land, described as swampy, was acquired by Village in 1988 after the 1987 Black Monday stock market crash had crippled previous owners. In 1989, a joint venture was formed with Pivot Leisure to develop the site. Designed by C. V. Wood—who had worked on Disneyland and Six Flags Over Texas—the park was scaled to accommodate up to 13,000 guests daily and cost an estimated $120–140 million to construct. The development was a collaborative effort involving a partnership with Pivot Leisure. This venture aimed to transform the vast area into a major entertainment precinct.

Opened on 3 June 1991, the park was a significant milestone as the first 'American-style' theme park built outside the United States since Tokyo Disneyland. While it features high-thrill attractions like the DC Rivals HyperCoaster, its original mission was educational, designed to teach guests about the filmmaking processes. Today, it remains a cornerstone of the Gold Coast's tourism, attracting an average of 1.4 million visitors per year as of 2016. The park's opening ceremony featured several famous celebrities, including Mel Gibson and Clint Eastwood. It has since grown to include various attractions based on DC Comics properties.
