In short: Developed by a consortium of Iveco and OTO Melara, the C1 Ariete is a third-generation main battle tank. It combines advanced digital fire-control systems with a 120 mm smoothbore gun. While its design prioritizes weight efficiency for easier transport, ongoing modernizations aim to address earlier limitations in power and protection.

The C1 Ariete, whose name translates to battering ram, was developed by the Consorzio Iveco Oto Melara to serve as the Italian Army's primary armored vehicle. Its design follows a conventional layout, with the driver positioned at the front, the fighting compartment in the center, and the engine at the rear. The tank is powered by a 25.8-litre turbo-diesel V12 engine, allowing it to reach speeds of 65 km/h. To maintain mobility and ease of transport, the vehicle's total weight was kept below 60 tonnes, a decision that necessitated a compromise in armor thickness compared to some heavier Western counterparts.

Central to the tank's effectiveness is the OG14L3 TURMS fire-control system. This digital suite allows the commander and gunner to engage targets day or night, utilizing thermal sights that can resolve a 2.3-meter target from 1,500 meters away. The system also features hunter-killer capability, enabling the commander to designate targets for the gunner while maintaining a 360-degree field of vision. The main armament is a 120 mm smoothbore gun, supported by an electro-hydraulic drive system that stabilizes the barrel in both azimuth and elevation, ensuring accuracy even while the tank is moving.

Despite its capabilities, the Ariete faced early challenges regarding its powerplant, which required high RPMs to perform effectively, leading to increased maintenance needs. Efforts to upgrade the platform, including a proposed C2 variant, were initially hampered by budget constraints. However, a 2023 contract worth €848.8 million initiated a major modernization program for 90 tanks. This upgrade replaces hydraulic turret drives with electric ones to improve safety and accuracy, integrates the 30.1-litre Iveco Vector 12 engine, and adds advanced communication systems. These improvements are designed to extend the operational life and combat effectiveness of the Ariete within the modern Italian Army.
