Changzhou: A Chinese city with 6,000 years of history and a modern industrial heartbeat.
In short: From Neolithic burial sites and ancient walled cities to the birthplace of the pinyin romanization system, Changzhou has evolved through millennia. Today, this Yangtze Delta hub balances a dense network of historic canals with high-speed rail, world-class dinosaur museums, and a legacy of revolutionary thinkers and industrial innovation.
Human habitation in the Changzhou region dates back over 6,000 years to the Neolithic Majiabang culture. Archaeological evidence, such as the Weidun site, reveals a long history of settlement. By the Liangzhu period, the area featured sophisticated polities like the Sidun site, which included a massive earthen altar and high-status burials containing dozens of jade artifacts. During the Spring and Autumn period, the walled city of Yancheng was constructed with a unique design of three concentric moats and walls, marking it as a significant ritual or defensive center.
The city's strategic location on the Grand Canal, completed in 609, solidified its role as a prosperous commercial and political hub. However, this prominence also invited conflict. In 1275, during the Mongol conquest, the city suffered a devastating massacre after a 45-day siege, an event that reportedly served as a grim warning to other cities in the region. Centuries later, the city became a focal point for the Taiping Rebellion, and by the 1920s, it emerged as a vital center for cotton manufacturing, especially as businesses fled Shanghai during the Japanese occupation.
Modern Changzhou is a blend of the ancient and the contemporary. It houses the Tianning Temple, home to the world's tallest pagoda, while also serving as a major transportation node with high-speed rail connections and a sophisticated bus rapid transit system. The city is also the birthplace of influential figures, including Zhou Youguang, the linguist who created the pinyin system, and several early leaders of the Chinese Communist Party. With a population exceeding 5.2 million as of the 2020 census, it remains a critical player in the economic landscape of the Yangtze Delta.
