In short: Nestled in the southeast of Shanxi province, Jincheng is a city of striking contrasts. While it serves as a critical industrial hub for coal and high-tech manufacturing, it also holds deep roots in Chinese mythology and Paleolithic history, with archaeological sites proving human habitation dating back 100,000 years.

Jincheng’s history is as layered as its landscape. Archaeological findings, such as the Tashui site discovered in 1986, reveal that humans thrived in the region between 70,000 and 100,000 years ago. By the Warring States period, the area became a strategic focal point, hosting the famous battle of Changping between the states of Qin and Zhao. Over centuries, it evolved through various administrative iterations—from the Shangdang Shire of the Qin dynasty to the Zezhoufu of the Qing dynasty—before finally being designated a prefecture-level city in 1985.

Today, the city is defined by its massive mineral wealth. Anthracite coal covers over 56% of its total area, with reserves accounting for more than a quarter of China’s total supply. This industrial legacy has historically brought challenges, specifically regarding air pollution. In response, the local government has implemented significant ecological initiatives, including the development of vast parks, the relocation of polluting factories, and the promotion of coalbed methane as a cleaner alternative fuel source.

Beyond traditional mining, Jincheng has integrated into the global supply chain through high-tech manufacturing. A major Foxconn campus operates within the city, producing fiber optic parts and mechanical components for mobile phones, such as camera modules and frames. With an annual output of approximately 35 million pieces, this facility highlights the city's transition toward modern industrial diversification. Despite its economic significance, Jincheng remains a place where ancient legends of figures like Nüwa and Shennong still color the cultural identity of its 2.2 million residents.
