How a French shipyard became a global titan of maritime engineering
In short: Located at the mouth of the Loire, Chantiers de l'Atlantique is Europe’s largest shipyard. From legendary transatlantic liners to the world's first mega cruise ship, this Saint-Nazaire facility has shaped the history of ocean travel through massive engineering feats and shifting global ownership.
The shipyard's legacy is rooted in the Ateliers et Chantiers de Saint-Nazaire Penhoët, the yard responsible for iconic transatlantic liners like the France, Île de France, and Normandie. Following a merger of Ateliers et Chantiers de Penhoët and Ateliers et Chantiers de la Loire, the yard assumed its present name in 1955. This evolution allowed the facility to pivot from passenger liners to massive tankers, such as the Batillus-class supertankers launched between 1976 and 1979. The facility's history includes ownership by Alstom and later Aker Yards. Following the bankruptcy of STX Corporation, the French government intervened to secure its future.
Engineering requirements often dictate the shipyard's infrastructure. A specialized dry dock was constructed to accommodate tankers exceeding one million tonnes, specifically for vessels like the Gastor and Nestor built between 1975 and 1977. This massive dock remained largely idle until it was utilized for the construction of Cunard's Queen Mary 2. During that specific construction project, a tragic accident occurred when a gangway collapsed, resulting in sixteen deaths.
The shipyard has also been a pioneer in the cruise industry. In 1987, it delivered the Sovereign of the Seas, which was recognized as the world's first mega cruise ship. Over the following decades, it delivered various vessels for Royal Caribbean Cruise Line, including the Monarch of the Seas and the Vision of the Seas. The site continues to lead globally, containing Dock STX Europe, which by 2025 stands as the world's sixth-largest usable volume and fourth-largest shipbuilding hall. In 2022, the yard introduced a new crane to assist with the Celebrity Ascent construction. This modern equipment replaced an older model that had been in service since 1967.
