In short: Campbell University football is a tale of two eras. After early success as a junior college, the program vanished for decades due to global conflict and shifting academic standards. Its modern revival in 2008 marked a return to the gridiron, eventually leading to Division I competition and NFL representation.

The roots of football in Buies Creek trace back to 1925, when the institution was known as Buies Creek Academy. Following its rebranding as Campbell Junior College in 1926, the team quickly established dominance, securing state-level junior college championships in 1929 and 1932, and sharing another title in 1939 alongside Belmont Abbey and Brevard College. This initial period of athletic success was interrupted by the onset of World War II, though the program managed a resilient comeback with three consecutive state titles between 1946 and 1948.

The program faced an indefinite hiatus following the Korean War. During this time, the university evolved, becoming a four-year institution in 1961 and joining the National Collegiate Athletic Association by 1977. It was not until 2006 that the university announced a formal plan to restart football, with the team officially returning to the field in 2008 as a Division I FCS program playing at the newly constructed 5,000-seat Barker–Lane Stadium.

Since the revival, the program has undergone significant structural changes. Initially competing in the non-scholarship Pioneer Football League, the team transitioned to the Big South Conference in 2018, the same year it began offering football scholarships. By 2023, the program moved again, joining the Coastal Athletic Association. This modern era has also seen the team reach new milestones, producing its first NFL player, Brevin Allen, and its first athlete to secure a spot on an NFL final roster, Julian Hill.

The coaching history of the modern era reflects the program's ongoing development. Dale Steele served as the first head coach from 2008 to 2012, followed by Mike Minter, who led the team until 2023. In 2024, Braxton Harris took over the head coaching duties. Despite the challenges of building a program from the ground up, these efforts have firmly established Campbell within the competitive landscape of modern college football.
