In short: Founded in 1892 by nineteen students, the Colorado State football program has evolved from a modest agricultural college team into a consistent competitor. Over more than a century, the Rams have navigated coaching eras, conference shifts, and iconic stadium transitions, defining their identity through resilience and legendary on-field moments.

The program began on December 12, 1892, when F.O. Congdon and 18 fellow students at Colorado Agricultural College organized the school's first team. Initially known as the CACs, the squad played its inaugural game on January 7, 1893, against Longmont Academy. Early years were marked by instability, including a brief disbandment by college president Alston Ellis in 1894 and a controversial 1899 Border War game against Wyoming that ended in a brawl and a forfeited victory that the university still does not officially count.

The program found its footing under Harry Hughes, who served as head coach from 1911 to 1941. Hughes, dubbed the Dean of American Football Coaches, transformed the team into a regional powerhouse, winning eight conference championships and introducing the innovative Million Dollar Play in 1914. His legacy remains tied to the school's history, as he oversaw the construction of Colorado Field and was later honored with the naming of Hughes Stadium in 1968.

Modern success arrived under Sonny Lubick, who took over in 1993. Inheriting a program with only two previous bowl appearances, Lubick built a culture of winning that lasted a decade. His 1994 team achieved a school-record 10 victories, while the 1997 squad finished 11–2, securing the program's first bowl victory against Missouri in the Holiday Bowl. This era featured standout players like Joey Porter and Clark Haggans, cementing the Rams' reputation as a respectable force in college football.

Today, the team competes in the Pac-12 Conference and plays at Canvas Stadium, which opened in 2017. The program continues to balance its rich history—from the early days of orange and green ribbons to the modern era of high-stakes competition—with the ongoing pursuit of excellence under current leadership.
