The Indian Test Specialist Who Redefined Patience and Discipline in Modern Cricket
In short: Cheteshwar Pujara was a cornerstone of the Indian Test team for over a decade, celebrated for a disciplined batting style that prioritized longevity over aggression. A master of the long innings, he set records for first-class run-scoring and became a pivotal figure in historic series victories across the globe.
Born in Rajkot in 1988, Cheteshwar Pujara was groomed for the sport by his father and uncle, both former Ranji Trophy players. His transition to professional cricket was marked by an extraordinary ability to occupy the crease. By 2013, he had become only the ninth batsman to record three first-class triple-centuries, a testament to his immense concentration and technical soundness. His domestic dominance was highlighted by a record-breaking 1,605 runs in the 2016–17 Indian first-class season, surpassing a mark that had stood since 1964.
Pujara’s international career was defined by his resilience in challenging conditions. During the 2018–19 tour of Australia, he was instrumental in India’s first-ever Test series win on Australian soil. He scored 521 runs across the series, facing a record 1,258 deliveries, and was named player of the series. His capacity to anchor an innings was frequently the difference between defeat and victory, notably during his 202-run knock in Ranchi in 2017, which remains the longest innings by an Indian batsman in terms of balls faced.
Despite his success, Pujara’s career was not without challenges. He faced periods of inconsistent form, including a difficult 2014 tour of England and his eventual exclusion from the national team following the 2023 World Test Championship Final. After a career spanning over 100 Test matches, Pujara transitioned into commentary before officially announcing his retirement from all forms of cricket in August 2025. His legacy remains that of a quintessential Test match specialist who thrived in an era increasingly dominated by shorter, faster formats.
