Is Chhattisgarh named after thirty-six ancient forts or an empire of kings?
In short: Tracing the origins of Chhattisgarh reveals a puzzle of history and geography. While the name suggests a land of thirty-six forts, historians remain skeptical of this popular theory. Instead, they point toward ancient dynasties and linguistic shifts, highlighting a region that has evolved from a tribal heartland into an industrial powerhouse.
The name Chhattisgarh is a subject of ongoing debate. The most common explanation links it to the Hindi words 'chhattis' (thirty-six) and 'garh' (fort), suggesting the region was once defined by thirty-six feudal territories. However, most historians reject this narrative, noting that no such collection of thirty-six specific forts has ever been identified. An alternative, more widely accepted theory among experts is that the name is a corruption of 'Chedisgarh,' referring to the ancient Empire of the Chedis.
Historically, the region was known as Dakshina Kosala and served as a crossroads for various dynasties. From the 6th to the 12th centuries, it was contested by rival powers, including the Cholas and the Kalachuris. By 1740, the Haihaiyavanshi Kingdom, which had consolidated much of the area, fell to the Marathas. Following a period of British administration as part of the Central Provinces, the region was eventually merged into Madhya Pradesh in 1956. It remained there for 44 years until a long-standing movement for autonomy culminated in the creation of a separate state on 1 November 2000.
Today, Chhattisgarh is a resource-rich state that plays a critical role in India's economy. It holds the third-largest coal reserves in the country and contributes significantly to national steel and electricity production. Despite its rapid development and a 2023–24 GSDP estimated at ₹5.09 lakh crore, the state faces challenges in modernizing its agricultural sector. While 80% of the population remains rural, many farmers still rely on traditional subsistence methods. Balancing this industrial output with agricultural reform remains a central focus for the state's future.
